BACnet
The dominant open communication protocol for building automation systems such as HVAC, lighting, and access control.
BACnet (Building Automation and Control Networks) is an ASHRAE-standardized protocol that lets building systems — chillers, air handlers, VAV boxes, lighting controllers, meters — exchange data regardless of manufacturer. It is the lingua franca of commercial building management systems, transported most commonly as BACnet/IP over Ethernet or BACnet MS/TP over serial networks.
BACnet exposes devices as collections of standardized objects — analog inputs, binary outputs, schedules, alarms — which makes it practical for an external platform to read temperatures, statuses, and alarm states from an existing BMS without vendor lock-in. For maintenance platforms, BACnet integration means HVAC faults and runtime data can flow into asset records and trigger work automatically.
In facilities contexts, BACnet plays the role that Modbus and OPC-UA play in industrial plants: the ingestion path by which an IoT gateway or CMMS reads what the installed control layer already knows.
