APM (Asset Performance Management)
A discipline and software category focused on maximizing asset reliability, availability, and performance across their lifecycle.
Asset Performance Management (APM) is the layer of practice and software that sits above day-to-day maintenance execution and asks a broader question: are our assets delivering the reliability and output the business needs, at acceptable cost and risk? APM combines condition monitoring, reliability analytics, criticality analysis, and failure prediction to inform maintenance strategy rather than just schedule tasks.
Where a CMMS manages the work — orders, PMs, parts, labor — APM manages the why: which assets deserve which strategy, which failure modes drive the most loss, and where investment in monitoring or renewal pays back. The two are complementary, and in modern platforms increasingly converge into a single system where sensor data, work history, and analytics share one asset record.
Typical APM outputs include asset health scores, remaining-useful-life estimates, bad-actor rankings, and risk matrices used to prioritize both maintenance and capital planning.
