SCADA
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition — the systems that monitor and control industrial processes in real time across plants and distributed infrastructure.
SCADA systems are the real-time supervisory layer of industrial operations: they gather data from PLCs, RTUs, and instruments, display it to operators through HMI screens, log it in historians, raise alarms, and send control commands. They run plants, water networks, pipelines, and power distribution — anywhere a process must be watched and steered continuously across many devices or sites.
SCADA and maintenance platforms are complementary layers with a clear division: SCADA owns real-time control and safety; the CMMS/EAM layer owns assets, work, and history. The connection between them is valuable in both directions — SCADA alarms and runtime data flowing into the maintenance platform trigger condition-based work and feed meters, while asset criticality and work status inform operations.
Integration is typically read-only from the maintenance side, via OPC-UA, historian APIs, or gateway ingestion. A well-designed operations platform proposes actions to the control room; it does not reach around the control system, and it never bypasses safety interlocks.
