GLOSSARY

IoT Gateway

An edge device that collects data from sensors and industrial equipment and relays it securely to a cloud or on-premise platform.

An IoT gateway is the bridge between field devices and software platforms. It speaks the local languages — LoRaWAN for battery-powered wireless sensors, Modbus and OPC-UA for PLCs and drives, BACnet for building systems, MQTT for modern devices — aggregates the data, and forwards it upstream over a secure connection. Without a gateway, every sensor would need its own network path and its own integration.

Good gateways do more than relay. Edge processing filters and compresses data (sending vibration features rather than raw waveforms), buffers readings during connectivity outages so nothing is lost, applies local alert logic when round-trips to the cloud are too slow, and keeps sensitive raw data on site where policy requires it.

In full-stack platforms such as OpsSense, the gateway ships pre-paired with the vendor's sensors and pre-registered to the site, collapsing commissioning from an integration project to a mounting task. Openness still matters: a gateway should ingest third-party devices over standard protocols, not just its own family.
