Condition Monitoring
The continuous or periodic measurement of equipment health indicators such as vibration, temperature, and energy draw.
Condition monitoring is the measurement practice underneath condition-based and predictive maintenance: tracking physical indicators that change as equipment degrades. Vibration analysis detects bearing wear, imbalance, and misalignment in rotating machinery; thermal monitoring catches overheating connections and failing insulation; current and energy signatures reveal mechanical load changes; ultrasound finds leaks and early-stage bearing faults.
Monitoring can be periodic — a technician with a handheld analyzer walking a route monthly — or continuous, with permanently mounted wireless sensors streaming data through a gateway. Continuous monitoring has fallen sharply in cost and catches the failure that develops between route visits, which is why fixed sensors now dominate new deployments on critical assets.
The output is only useful when it lands somewhere actionable. Mature programs pipe condition data into the same platform that manages work orders, so a threshold breach or anomaly becomes an inspection task with the evidence attached.
